To All: Capoeira is a dance-like martial art originated in Brazil during slavery. It was introduced in Europe and the United States in the late 1960s and early 1970s as capoeiristas travelled outside Brazil and established themselves in other countries. Today Capoeira has become very popular throughout the United States and the world, and capoeira groups are found in places as far as Israel and Japan. Capoeira's universal appeal crosses gender and cultures, ages and social status. Capoeira develops a sense of community and promotes understanding and acceptance of others. Capoeira is a mix of martial art discipline, tempered with dance, music, and rhythms and appeals to people of all ages. To Parents: The benefits of capoeira are too numerous to be listed here. However, as your child becomes more exposed to this ancient Brazilian art form, he/she should develop self-confidence, coordination, flexibility, agility and strength. Your child will also be introduced to music by learning how to play percussion instruments. Throughout its oral tradition retained in the songs that are an essential component of its practice, capoeira will also prepare your child for the challenge of language acquisition and pave the way to more successful language learning in school environments.
